I would like to share a very beautiful prayer by a 4th year high school student of Pugad Lawin High School in Quezon City, during the 3rd Climate Change and the Youth Seminar last January 21, 2009.

"Oh, loving and merciful God, we thank you for this day that we all gathered here and for the opportunity to have this kind of seminar.

Our profound thanksgiving goes beyond words, oh, our dear Father, for everyday that passes in our lives You have answered our prayers. We pray that You may guide us in our journey so that today and always we may render You glory.

Lord, before You created humankind, You created first the universe - the seas, land, trees, animals and others. You put them under the stewardship of humankind. We know that we have destroyed the beauty of Your creation. Forgive us in our negligence and selfishness.

Once more, we come to You on bended knees to ask for forgiveness for our sins. Remove our bad habits and negative traits for they do harm to ourselves and to others.

Lord Jesus, help us become firm in facing the trials that may come in our lives. Free us from anxieties and cares that trouble our hearts and minds. Drive away negative feelings that cause us to think badly so that we may remain walking in your light. Give us the wisdom to understand the true meaning of the things we hear and may we be able to respond to the deeper needs of people indirectly expressed in their words in accordance to Your will.

This we pray through Christ our Lord, Amen."

2nd HS3 in UPLB

The 8th Finding and Pursuing the Right Job was held last December 16, 2008 at the College of Public Affairs (CPAf) in U.P. Los Banos. It was organized by the Social Development Services of the College of Human Ecology, and was attended by 21 graduating students from the CHE and College of Arts and Sciences.

The module was facilitated by Mr. Alexey Rola Cajilig, President of Centre 8 Training and Research Services and assisted by Mr. Paul Pablico (Director for Services). This is the second HS3 conducted in UPLB.

"It (the seminar) offered me with tips on how I am going to find my way after graduation," remarked a participant. Another student shared that "by determining a possible career path that I might consider after graduating from college." In general the participants rated HS3 as very useful and suggested that other graduating students undergo the same seminar as well.

HS3 with NYC

Centre 8 Training and Research Services conducted the HS3 (7th Finding and Pursuing the Right Job and the 3rd Overcoming the Interview Blues) last December 11, 2008 with the Government Internship Program (GIP) participants from the National Youth Commission. This seminar series is sponsored by NYC and has been a regular program for every GIP batch in order to equip them with necessary skills in becoming self-reliant individuals and successful members in the employment arena.

It was attended by 21 participants coming from high school and college levels as well as college graduates, and was facilitated by Mr. Alexey Rola Cajilig (President of Centre 8 Training and Research Services).

"Malaking bagay ito, nadiskubre ko kung ano talaga ang gusto kong uri ng trabaho... marami ng kong napasukan pero di ako tumatagal... ngayon naintindihan ko na kung bakit" - Eric Ramos, 21 years old. Harvesting Success with Quezon City's Scholars

Centre 8 conducted the 6th Finding and Pursuing the Right Job seminar to 89 scholars (4th year graduating college students) of Quezon City's Scholarship and Youth Development Program (SYDP). Developed by Centre 8 Training and Research Services, the module aimed to expand the opportunities for youth employment by promoting the concept job functions. The 4-hour seminar that involved lectures and exercises was facilitated by Mr. Alexey Rola Cajilig, President of Centre 8.

The Finding and Pursuing the Right Job is the first of a 2-part seminar series for the Harvesting Success Seminar Series (HS3).

Climate Change Symposium for the Youth

Centre 8 Training and Research Services conducted a series of Climate Change Symposia (Global Climate Change: Its Impacts and the Opportunities for Youth Involvement) at the Quezon City Hall last December 9 and 10, 2008. Sponsored by the SK Federation of Quezon City (led by Hon. Alexis Grace Matias), the 2-day event was attended by 73 highschool students and 41 SK members from districts 1-4. The main speaker for the Climate Change training was Mr. Alexey Rola Cajilig (President of Centre 8 and member of the Human Ecology Institute of the Philippines).

The symposia was conducted as part of Quezon City's celebration of the Linggo ng Kabataan, themed "Sama-sama sa Kinabukasan... Sagipin ang Kalikasan." The module discussed the topics on Global warming and Climate Change, as well as its Impacts, Mitigation and Adaptation Measures. The EPWMD of Quezon City likewise shared insights on their environmental activities in the City.

At the end of each module, the participants were encouraged to draft broad stroke mitigation and adaptation programs for the youth and their communities. Their output will become the basis for the resolutions that will be submitted to the City Council.

Climate Change Adaptation Measures

Climate Change is here and real and we need to learn to adapt to its impacts in order to achieve and sustain development. This is the main message of the 3rd Conference in Human Ecology held last November 25-26, 2008 at NISMED U.P. Diliman. The 2-day conference was organized by the Human Ecology Institute of the Philippines (HUMEIN), the College of Human Ecology in UP Los Banos, the UP-School for Urban and Regional Planning, and the AIM Policy Center.

The conference was attended by more than 100 participants with representing 30 LGUs from CALABARZON, Zamboanga City, Bais City, Isabela, Pangasinan, Rizal, Mindoro Occidental, and Iligan City, General Santos City and Pampanga. It was also attended by faculty, alumni and students of Human Ecology, as well as other practitioners of the human ecological perspectives.

It was a very lively and informative event as speakers in the forefront of climate change mitigation and adaptation programs discussed recent global and national findings and trend. Among those who shared their expertise were Dr. Felino Lansigan of UPLB, Dr. Rosa Perez, Dr. Candido Cabrido Jr. of UP-SURP, Dr. Rogelio Concepcion, Dr. Federico Macaranas of the AIM Policy Center, and Dr. Meliton Juanico of UP Diliman. The event was made even more exciting and challenging with Mrs. Imelda Marcos' insights on human settlements and Albay Governor Joey Salceda's Climate Change programs, respectively.

As a result of the conference, a Call for Action was drafted by the participants to urge local government executives, the legislative representatives, as well as the executive departments to enforce genuine Climate Change programs and projects along 8 focal points - ecological viability, social viability, economic viability, institutional viability, political viability, technological viability, mitigation and adaptation, and cultural viability.

Centre 8 supports this endeavor and congratulates HUMEIN Philippines in this very successful event.

2nd "Overcoming the Interview Blues" Seminar

Sixteen youths from Parola, Tondo attended the Overcoming the Interview Blues Seminar last November 23, 2008 at the KAGABAY Tambayan in Gate 17 of Parola, Tondo.

This activity was the 2nd part of the Harvesting Success Seminar Series (HS3) conducted by Centre 8 Training and Research Services for the youths in Parola, Tondo. It was held in coordination with Barangay Kagawad Alfred Elmido, KAGABAY President Erwin Odas and SK Chairperson Paola Bianca Elmido.

Kuya Lexey of Centre 8 shared valuable tips on the do's and dont's of job interviews. He also reviewed the resumes of participants to prepare them for actual job hunting endeavors.

The HS3 was introduced in the area to encourage the youth to seek employment and become economically productive members of the community. It was also aimed to improve their chances of getting the right job. KAGABAY and the local SK group will meet to discuss how the youth in Parola can benefit from HS3.

Centre 8 Supports the 3rd Conference in Human Ecology

Centre 8 is supporting the 3rd Conference in Human Ecology with the theme Sustainable Towns and Cities in the Midst of Global Climate Change. The conference will be held at UP NISMED (UP Diliman Campus, near the University Registrar) on November 25-26, 2008.

One of the objectives of this conference is to focus our attention towards climate change adaptation measures. Global warming is already a reality, hence we must be ready for it...

The conference is organized by the Human Ecology Institute of the Philippines (HUMEIN-Phils) and the UPLB College of Human Ecology, in cooperation with UP-School for Urban and Regional Planning (SURP) and the Asian Institute of Management (AIM).

The conference speakers include leading personalities in climate change studies (Dr. Lansigan - UPLB, Dr. Macaranas - AIM Policy Center, Dr. Cabrido - UP SURP, Mr. Amador - DENR, Gov. Salceda - Albay, Prof. Acosta - AIM) and will be attended by academic peers, corporate social responsibility (CSR) representatives, and planning and environment officers from various local government units of Pampanga, Mindoro and CALABARZON, and various human ecologists.

The event will be sponsored in part by Filipinas Shell, Globe Telecoms, San Miguel Corporation, SAGIP Environment, Jimena Land, LO Norway, Unilever, CBK and other private individuals/organizations.

Harvesting Success in Tondo!

The Harvesting Success Seminar Series is now in Parola, Tondo. Centre 8 Training and Research Services launched the HS3 program in Tondo last November 8, 2008 as part of its social responsibility initiatives, and was co-sponsored by the Kabataang Gabay ng Bayan (KAGABAY) and the local Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) chapter. The initial training module (the 5th Finding and Pursuing the Right Job) was attended by 22 youth participants from the SK group, KAGABAY, and the Samahan ng mga Kabataang Mamamayang Pilipino (SAKAMPIL). It was facilitated by Mr. Alexey Rola Cajilig and Ms. Rosel Isidro of Centre 8.

HS3 is a series of training modules designed to introduce the concepts of the Right Job and Job Functions. It also provides effective tips in preparing resumes, and proven techniques in overcoming interview blues.

"The youths in our community have a lot of potentials. We also have many college graduates. Yet very few are currently employed. The HS3 Program of Centre 8 can provide the right direction in pursuing careers and will also help boost their morale in the midst of job-hunting realities" - Mr. Alfred G. Elmido , a barangay councilor and youth leader in Parola, Tondo. The program aims to enhance their chances of getting employed, thereby improving the quality of life in the community.

The next HS3 training module (the 2nd Overcoming the Interview Blues) for Parola, Tondo will be scheduled in the last week of November.

Harvesting Success Seminar Series

During my stints with two (2) manpower organizations, I reviewed resumes and interviewed applicants aspiring for local and international jobs (for entry-level and executive positions). In most cases, applications were rejected because of poor presentation. In saying this, I am not referring to aesthetic appeal but on how skills and credentials were presented. Yet the problem is not limited to this aspect. During job interviews, it became apparent that most applicants had little sense of career direction. Moreover, most had difficulty in expressing themselves during this very important job-seeking process.

I reckon that to date, the picture remain the same.

Centre 8 would like to contribute in addressing this concern, hence we launched our Harvesting Success Seminar Series. This is a 2-part training series for the youth (high school and college levels, and out-of-school youth) designed to facilitate a discovery on the appropriate career directions, provide effective tips in preparing resumes, as well as tips on job interviews.

To date, Centre 8 Training and Research Services has successfully conducted four (4) HS3 activities - 3 batches with the National Youth Commission's (NYC) Government Internship Program (GIP) and a session in UP Los Banos. Due to its relevance, the Hs3 has been adopted by NYC as a regular GIP training program conducted every other month.

The 5th Harvesting Success Seminar Series will be conducted this Saturday, November 8, at Parola, Tondo in partnership with the Kabataang Gabay ng Bayan (KAGABAY). This will be a regular program that will increase the youths' chances in getting the right job... and harvest success!
